March 08 Countdown To The
2008 Budget - The Chancellor, Alistair Darling, will deliver his first
Budget speech on 12 March 2008. There are a lot of changes likely to
badly affect small businesses, so it is important that all small business
owners keep themselves aware of the changes, many of which won't actually be
part of the speech, but instead hidden in the small print, as usual! In
particular, there are fundamental changes for small businesses in areas as
diverse as capital allowances for the purchase of equipment, capital gains tax
relief on sale of business assets, how dividends are split between husbands
and wives, increases in corporation tax and national insurance. It is
highly likely that most small businesses will pay more tax from the start of
the new tax year, April 2008, so they need to know the implications and take
advantage of any "last minute" steps they can take before the end of
March.
March 08 Kashflow
Book-keeping Software - We are delighted to announce that we have made the
decision to adopt KashFlow
as our recommended book-keeping software. Kashflow
is a web-based online system which caters for the business owner with little
book-keeping experience. A free fully functioning 60 day trial is
available. Clients should contact us prior to chosing any accounting
software so that we can help them decide if it's right for them.
March 08 Quickbooks
Accounting Software - We are no longer recommending Quickbooks to our
clients due to the widely reported problems with their latest software,
Quickbooks 2008, and their policy of effectively forcing customers to pay to
upgrade to newer products by withdrawing support from older versions.
There is actually an interesting forum
discussion on Quickbooks' own website.
For any clients who are currently using Quickbooks software, we strongly
advise you NOT to upgrade to the 2008 version until Quickbooks have sorted out
all the problems. In the meantime, if you have an older version which is
no longer supported, you can still buy the 2006 version, which is continuing
to be supported, from the usual software suppliers and on Ebay, although sadly
it is not available from the Quickbooks website.
